The South Carolina driver lost the lead to a hard-charging Payton Freeman, hunting for his first career ULTIMATE victory. He was battling a car that wasn’t running at full song, struggling with a carburetor issue.
After a flat tire for leader Payton Freeman, Ross Bailes won the Max King Memorial at Lavonia Speedway.
However, a flat tire for Freeman after 33 of 40 laps ended Freeman’s night early, and brought Bailes to ULTIMATE victory lane.
“The carburetor wasn’t running right. It was stumbling really bad and I couldn’t get through those holes good,” said Bailes. “Payton had a better car, especially in lapped traffic. I hate that happened to him, but we’ll take them any way we can get them.”
Bailes freely admitted that his chances of beating Freeman were slim, especially after a lap 31 caution removed lapped traffic from the equation.
The only way I was going to get by him was in lapped traffic. With that caution [with nine laps to go], he would have had clear sailing. – Ross Bailes
Ethan Wilson had started second in the ULTIMATE feature, but dropped back into the field on a hectic night of racing on the Georgia bullring. Nonetheless, Wilson rebounded to finish second.
“It was a little rough there, but it was good, hard racing. It’s hard to stay off each other when it gets so rough, but it put on a hell of a show. We’ll go home, go over everything, make sure everything is tight and do it all over again.”
Cla Knight completed the podium, while Kenny Collins finished fourth and Nick Schlager finished fifth.
The ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series will be back in action Saturday night at Senoia Raceway as their Georgia doubleheader continues.
