WATCH LIVE: ARCA Midwest Tour at Milwaukee
Grill will be making the trip north to compete with the ARCA Midwest Tour at the historic one-mile oval, and he is looking forward to going to a unique venue for Super Late Models.
“Over the last couple of years, I’ve gotten to go to some places I don’t normally go, so it’s a neat deal,” Grill told Speed51. “Thankfully, Bobby Reuse offered to take my car up there in his truck and trailer, so that makes things easier. We’re going to go up there and try it out.
The veteran racer hasn’t been to Milwaukee in decades, but remembers it sharing similar traits as his old hometown track.
I haven’t been up there since the late 90s. It’s just a big, flat, one-mile race track. It reminded me a lot of Birmingham a lot, honestly. Just big, long, sweeping corners and flat. It’ll be fun to give it a try here this weekend.
Nearly 40 drivers are confirmed entrants for the Father’s Day 100, promising a star-studded field with the best drivers from Wisconsin and beyond taking part in the event. However, Grill is no stranger to stiff competition over the years.
“It’s no different than any other race. If I have my stuff together and my car’s good, I feel like I can run with anyone in the country at any time. It seems like it’s getting harder and harder to get my stuff right every race. I’ve just got to do my homework, and hopefully when we unload, we’ll be in pretty good shape at the first of practice. Hopefully, we’ll have speed right off the trailer.”
While he knows there will be some differences in how he attacks The Milwaukee Mile, he plans to lean on his experience during the trip, knowing that the feel for what makes a fast lap time won’t change with increased top speeds.
“It’s a little bit different frame of mind. It’s still about making fast lap times. You’ve got to have a car that rolls good and you’re not too tight through the corners. Hopefully, you have a car that cuts through the air better than some of the other cars, but we’re limited on what we can do with the bodies. It’s all about getting your car through those long corners, and hoping your car is better than everybody else’s.”
