The grand opening for 4-17 Southern Speedway in Punta Gorda, Florida could not have asked for better weather. It was Chamber of Commerce weather as they say. Beautiful skies greeted 24 Super Late Models for the Davisdson Memorial 100 powered by Sunoco and American Racer.

Jesse Dutilly set fast time in front of the newly erected packed grandstands. He would end up starting eighth after the inversion.

300x250 PFC 2017 JanMichael Atwell started on the pole and led every lap. He was not without his challenges though throughout the event.

The first caution flew on the start when David Weaver lifter the rear end of Joe Boyd off the ground and sent him spinning in turn two. The result was a complete restart with Weaver losing the nose of his machine.

Fifteen laps in saw TJ Duke rise up to third following Atwell and Nick Neri, who started on the outside front row.

A long green flag run had the top five remain pretty much the same. Atwell, TJ Duke, Nick Neri, Jesse Dutilly and Anthony Sergi following nose to tail bobbing and weaving through traffic.

Lap 82 Saw the caution then the red flag fly when Joe Boyd got collected and tore the rear of his car up. There were several drivers involved. Drivers in the top five snaked their way through the debris field to keep their position until the green flew again.

David Green and Anthony Sergi tangled in turn three on lap 86 bringing out another caution.

In the end it was Michael Atwell holding everyone at bay to take the checkers. TJ Duke was right in Atwell’s tire tracks at the end of the event for second place.

Steve Dorer crossed the line third, but was disqualified in post-race tech, which gave Nick Neri third in the Davidson Memorial. Billy Bigley Jr and Jesse Dutilly rounded out the top five.

Carl Thompson in the V8 Bombers took the win and Seth Adams and Clayton Samuel got the checkers in the Legends and Mini Cup respectively.

4-17 Southern Speedway will be back in action this Saturday night with Pro Truck, Modified Minis, Street Stock V8 Bomber and Outlaw Modifieds.

4-17 Southern Speedway is located at 8655 Piper Rd, Punta Gorda, Florida.
