NO. STONINGTON, CT — Track experience proved to be critical when the North East Street Stock Tour made their first visit of the 2016 season to the New London-Waterford Speedbowl (NLWS). Defending NESST Champion, Joe Arena, used decades of experience to dominate the 35-lap main event.

Corey Hutchings and Steve Barrett led the 18-car field to green. Immediately, Hutchings – a two-time Street Stock Champion at NLWS – pulled away, pacing the first 11 circuits. Arena began to give Hutchings chase before he took over the top spot on lap 12. Al Stone, III and Chris Meyer – two NLWS regulars – followed Arena through the field, and quickly were in the second and third positions, respectively.

The three would continue that way for the balance of the 35-lap main event. Frank L’Etoile and Hutchings rounded out the top five.

The Showdown at the Speedbowl was Arena’s third career NESST victory, and second of the season. By virtue of his position at the halfway mark, Arena received the Dur-A-Flex halfway bonus.

Steve Barrett, who finished third in his heat race, fought an ill-performing car during the feature and is the recipient of the Northeast Race Cars & Parts Unlucky Dog Award. Barrett’s full-time job is protecting our country as an active member of the military, and deserves much more recognition for his bravery and selflessness.
