The time to get hot is late in the season and that’s the approach that Anthony Sergi has been taking. After a rough spring and lukewarm summer Sergi is heading into the final weeks of 2014 with a surge of power. The Oviedo, Florida driver was fifth at the Marion Edwards Memorial and second at the recent Bright House Series finale at Desoto Speedway.
Those late runs have Sergi geared up for the Florida Governor’s Cup 200 at New Smyrna Speedway later this month.
“Our cars have been really good as of recent,” explained Sergi. “The last race we qualified second, only .01 off the pole. We pulled the four pill and stated fourth. We managed to stay up towards the front during the race and get a solid second-place finish.”
Sergi hopes to take that momentum into the biggest race of the season later in November. The 49th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup 200 will draw cars from all around the region as they look to pocket the $15,000 first-place prize.
“I think we are going to be really good for Governor’s Cup,” added Sergi. “We are excited about running the race on a Sunday and think we will have a fast car like we had last time at the Marion Edwards Memorial.”
If there is one advantage that Sergi will have on the rest of the field it’s the number of laps he has at the track. He’s not missed many, if any, events in the last three or four seasons.
This will be the fourth Florida Governor’s Cup 200 for Sergi who had a career best fourth back in 2011. He’s been 12th and 15th in recent years in events that have had some of the deepest fields since the mid 1980’s.
“We have not really been making many changes just been working on the car,” explained Sergi about the recent success. “I think we are finally getting some good luck. We have had a fast car all season but we are always in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
