Another New Winner on Western Super Series Season

The 2020 season of the Speed51 Western Super Series presented by continues to produce new winners, with Alex McCollum capturing the win at ISM Raceway (AZ) Tuesday night after leading 69 of the 75 laps.

“At the start of the race, I just wanted to ride and get to the bottom as quickly as possible,” McCollum said.  “When I saw the guys start to wash up and overdrive, I took advantage one-by-one. I saved my tires with about 25 to go, and I ran my fastest lap on the last lap, so I think I saved my tires pretty well.”

McCollum survived a caution-filled race, including a late-race restart against ARCA East rookie Parker Retzlaff.

“I knew that last restart was going to be key, [Retzlaff] timed it perfect,” McCollum stated. “Kind of wish we had a little more green flag laps, never saw that long run, got to the lead pretty quick.”

Parker Retzlaff is coming off an eighth-place run at the ARCA East season opener last Monday at New Smyrna Speedway, but is currently in the points battle for the Western Super Series.

“I am just trying to get consistent finishes every week and not do anything dumb to lose a lot of points,” Retzlaff said.  “I was just conserving tires and not trying to burn the right front off, and I just messed up my chance on the last restart. I really like Southern National, it is one of my favorite tracks on the sim, so I feel really good about it looking into next week.”

New England Super Late Model racer Ryan Kuhn had a trialing race after being involved in a couple incidents, but he was able to rally to finish third.

“I tried saving really hard at the beginning and I got in a few wrecks which kind of ruined the strategy right there,” Kuhn said.  “I was down on straightaway speed but still had a good run there at the end and got third right at the line so I’m happy with that. Phoenix is more of a driver’s race track; it is a lot trickier like Loudon. Definitely one of my favorite tracks, it is just so fun to drive around this track. (Southern National) used to be one of my best tracks so hopefully I can get a good run there next week.”

The series heads to Southern National Motorsports Park next Tuesday, February 25 for 100 laps.
