While many events and gatherings around the nation have been postponed or canceled in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series carries on Friday night with its 10th Annual season opener at North Georgia Speedway.
For two-time and defending series champion Zack Mitchell, the race feels like just another day at the track. He joined a special episode of Speed51’s “The Bullring” live from North Georgia and described the setting at the 1/3-mile oval.
“Believe it or not, it seems pretty normal, like another Friday night at the race track,” Mitchell said. “We haven’t really heard a lot. We watched President Trump on Facebook. Right now, everything’s pretty normal and it’s going pretty good.
“I’ve got full faith in our President and all the guys on the CDC and our country. The good Lord will watch over us and take care of this.”
Mitchell noted that he has been taking some extra precautions leading up to today’s race in terms of sanitation.
“When you go to the convenience store, wash your hands when you get out, put a little hand sanitizer on them,” said Mitchell. “Take all the precautions you can. This is a serious deal, but take all the precautions you can, all that stuff.”
Despite the concerns and fears around the country, Mitchell is excited going into the season opener.
“We’re pretty excited. We haven’t been down here yet with this new Barry Wright, so we’re excited to get it on the track.”
The biggest issue thus far had actually been battling the remnants of rainfall at the Georgia facility over the past two weeks.
“They’ve had a lot of rain the past couple of weeks, but we’ll get these haulers in here and have a good show,” Mitchell stated. “We were one of the first ones in and we parked pretty much where we got stuck. [Donald] McIntosh came in after and did pretty much the same thing. We’re all a little crooked right now but it won’t change how we race.”
