Three-time defending Anderson Speedway (IN) track champion Jeff Marcum continued his dominating ways at the high-banked quarter-mile oval by winning the season opener for the CRA Vore’s Welding and Steel Late Model Sportsman. He claimed the lead early in the race after starting fourth and was nearly untouchable throughout, leaving only three other cars on the lead lap at the checkered flag.
The win comes after a strong run in last weekend’s ARCA/CRA Super Series race was cut short with mechanical issues.
“I had a good car to fire off, I was hoping it would stay with us,” Marcum told Speed51. “Last week in the Super Series race, we got a little tight, loose about fifty laps in or so. I was a little bit worried, but the car kept its grip the whole race. Our crew really put together a good race car for me. Every time, I really don’t doubt them and it just kept getting faster.”
Multi-time Angola Motorsport Speedway (IN) and Baer Field Motorsports Park (IN) champion Tommy Cook made the trip south to Anderson. After challenging Marcum on a series of restarts, he eventually settled for second.
“Jeff had us covered,” Cook said. “I could hang with him for about two or three laps then his car would come in and my car would just get loose. I think if I could have cleared him on the second to last restart when me and him ran side-by-side for a little bit, we would’ve been okay.”
Former series champion Billy Hutson’s day did not start off the way he wanted to after a practice incident. However, he recovered from it by setting fast time in qualifying and finishing the race in third.
“We started not that great,” Hutson stated. “The first practice, we brake-hopped turn three and ended up getting hit and the whole front end got bashed over to the left, so we had a lot of work to do to get that together. I ended up too tight and just couldn’t roll in the center. Hopefully, we’ll take it back home and get our homework done for the triple crown race in a couple months.
R.J. Norton, Jr. and Zachary Tinkle rounded out the top five.
The next race for the CRA Late Model Sportsman will be on Saturday, May 11that Baer Field Motorsports Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
