Shawn Amor had his car ready to go at last month’s scheduled season opener for the CRA Late Model Sportsman Series at Lucas Oil Raceway in Clermont, Indiana. When that event was canceled due to weather, they just left the car in the hauler waiting for this Friday night’s opener, which was also at Lucas Oil Raceway.
When they unloaded they were fast and went to victory lane.
Amor started off the day by setting a new track record in qualifying with a time of 22.879 and was 0.377 seconds faster than Jack Dossey III, who qualified second.
In the 30-lap main event, Amor didn’t slow down. Amor took the lead on lap 16 and took home the big win.
“I didn’t touch this car all winter. We got it ready in one day and loaded it for Cabin Fever last month, and we haven’t taken it out since then,” Amor said in victory lane. “But that race a month ago was canceled, and that was our favorite race. I think this is our new favorite race now.”
Billy Van Meter took the lead at the green flag and was quickly challenged by Trey Craig for the top spot.
On lap 5, Craig went to the outside of Van Meter coming out of turn two and took the lead.
A scary wreck occurred on lap 6 when Dossey and Thomas Hufferd Jr. got together in turn one with Dossey making hard contact with the wall. Jason Timmerman was also collected in the wreck to bring out a red flag. All drivers were able to walk away.
After the clean up, Craig got a good jump on the restart, but Amor was up to second and was chasing down Craig for the lead.
Amor would work the inside line while Craig would get momentum on the outside to sustain the top spot.
Craig would touch the wall in turns three and four on lap 16 allowing Amor to take over the lead and cruise to the victory.
“I knew he would be fast after qualifying and he blistered the track record,” Craig said after the race. “I was trying to save my tires hoping he would have wear his tires out on the bottom. But his car kept getting better, while I was falling back. When I got in the wall in turn three, my car went to crap and couldn’t hold on to it.”
Craig would hold off Jared Thomas for the runner-up spot.
Van Meter finished fourth and Scott Tomasik rounded out the top five.
The CRA Late Model Sportsman Series will be back in action on Saturday, May 2nd at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana for a 75-lap event.
