Alabama Young Gun Will Floss if He Wins at Montgomery

With drivers such as Carl Edwards celebrating wins with a backflip, and Kyle Busch celebrating with a bow, we at Speed51 may have found Grant Thompson’s calling card for when he wins races.  He was caught on camera doing the floss at the Blizzard Series doubleheader at Five Flags Speedway back in June, just before he climbed into the Truck and parked it in victory lane.

While on "The Bullring," he made sure to promise Speed51’s Bob Dillner to repeat it in victory lane if he wins at Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL) Saturday night.

“I’ll do the floss for you, Bob,” Thompson joked.  “I’ll do the floss for you.”

At just 14 years old, Thompson has been a mainstay in the Southeast in the Pro Trucks for the past couple years.  2020 has seen him move up to the Pro Late Models in the famed No. 112 Grand American Race Cars house car owned by two-time Snowball Derby champion Augie Grill.

The Alabama driver is set for his third start in a Pro Late Model this weekend with the Show Me The Money Series Saturday of Speed 125 Saturday night.

Thompson has spent most of his 2020 season in a Pro Truck for Curt Britt throughout the Southeast, where he holds the points lead at Five Flags Speedway with two wins.  The year has also seen Thompson realize a dream, getting to drive a Pro Late Model for one of his heroes.

“Driving for Augie Grill, that’s really a dream come true for me because growing up watching not only Augie Grill but also my dad when he was racing Late Models, Augie was in the prime of his career,” Thompson said.  "He was winning every weekend, just watching him race was a big inspiration for me and just to see him win all those races really motivated me to get in a race car myself.

“Now that I’m driving for him, it’s a dream come true.  I never thought I would be in the position that I am, especially with Augie.”

His two previous starts in a Pro Late Model came during the same weekend in June with the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Series at Five Flags and Show Me The Money Series at Montgomery.  He finished seventh in both races.

As he heads back to Montgomery for the second time in a Late Model, he is looking to improve on his last performance.

“When we last ran at Montgomery, we had a really good car.  To come back and go to Montgomery, I’d say to go and get a top-five finish.  It’s Augie Grill, he’s got one of the best race cars that I know of and if I got a top-five finish in his car, that would be awesome.”

He has leaned on Grill and the GARC team as he continues to go through his rookie year in Pro Late Models.  Grill won the Show Me The Money Series title last year in the same equipment Thompson has for this year.

“I know that Augie has really good race cars.  The Grand American Race Cars, those are some of the best chassis that I know.  Going into this weekend at Montgomery, just to get a good top-five finish, I would be super excited to do that.”
