Alabama Racer Picks a Good Night for First Win of 2019

B.J. Leytham picked a good night to earn his first win of the season. With the bright lights shining, the Alabama driver won the 50-lap Sportsmen feature on the opening night of the Snowball Derby. It was the fourth time he has visited victory lane during Snowball Derby week, and his first in a Sportsmen.

Leytham wrestled the lead away from Jason Huffmaster around the halfway point of the race and began to set sail. However, it ultimately proved to be short-lived when a hard-charging Chad Robinson got to his rear bumper in lapped traffic late, setting up an all-out dash for the win.

“These guys are great. I just have to thank my guys for getting me here. We haven’t won one race all year,” Leytham told “We put it on to them tonight, that’s what it’s all about.”

Robinson’s charge to Leytham’s back bumper was aided by lapped traffic and the battle had between Leytham and Huffmaster earlier in the race. Leytham saw Robinson coming quickly, but he never wavered.

“I knew he was coming, they were letting me know,” he stated. “I just had to hit my marks, I had enough on him that I knew I could stay. I still made a few mistakes but those are good guys, I wasn’t worried about them moving me or anything.”

Robinson put his No. 32 on the pole for the feature, but would go to the rear just one lap in after visiting pit road under yellow. He spent little time working back through the field, racing the top five before halfway and taking second with about fifteen laps to go and enough time to make a charge at Leytham.

“It was rough having to go to the back because we got ran over and thought the tire was popped or rubbing. Coming from last to second, that’s a good night,” I just asked if it was rubbing and they said yeah, we need to pull it out. I hated to come in leaving but I wasn’t going to take a chance to wreck it.”

Huffmaster, Tommie Blocker, and Jim Pokrant rounded out the top five.
