While other drivers got together with families over Thanksgiving weekend, JoJo Wilkinson took her family to the races and went kart racing. It was a successful trip for the Hueytown, Alabama driver, who won five races during the event dubbed Thanksgiving Thunder at Georgia Karting Komplex (GA).
At just 15 years old, Wilkinson became the winningest female money winner in the history of karting after scoring the wins over the weekend. It was a fun weekend filled with getting back to what started her racing career.
“It was really fun, I grew up racing go-karts with all my friends and stuff,” Wilkinson told Speed51.com. “To go there and see them was really good”
The driver known best as “JoJo” now turns her attention to the biggest Pro Late Model race in the country, the 21st Allen Turner Snowflake 100 at Five Flags Speedway on Saturday night. After an eventful 2019 that has seen her injured in a nasty wreck during the first Allen Turner Pro Late Model race at the Pensacola oval in April, to winning in just her second race back less than two months later at Huntsville Speedway in Alabama, she is ready to cap off the year with the Snowflake.
“I’m very excited, this is actually the best race of the year for me,” she stated. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Wilkinson made her Snowflake 100 debut in last year’s race, staying out of trouble through the attrition to finish ninth. With the “anything can happen” nature of the Snowflake 100 seen in recent years, keeping the car clean is key to making it all 100 laps.
“It’s a really, really long race and there’s going to be a bunch of wrecks, either have a bunch of wrecks or it could be all green,” she said. “You have to be real consistent and just be patient.”
With perhaps the biggest race of her young career looming on Saturday night, Wilkinson looks to improve on her top 10 finish from 2018 as she looks to next year.
“We finished top ten last year with a ninth, so my goal this year is to have my car in one piece, maybe even get a top five.”
