Even as race teams in many parts of the country have been enjoying their brief offseasons, 51’s Third Turn, Speed51’s partner for recording and preserving the history of short track racing has continued non-stop through the winter and spring adding loads of rare information to a huge database that now features statistics for over 78,500 drivers and 1,500 tracks.
The biggest milestone recently reached was the addition of the 45,000th race result to the database, though so much work continues that that number continues to jump every day.
“Winter and early spring is a great time for us to dig into archives, newspaper clippings and old photo albums,” says Tim Quievryn, 51’s Third Turn founder. “We spent a lot of the offseason focusing on adding histories for Dirt Late Model and Dirt Modified series and began documenting some of what’s going on over in the Sprint Car racing circles.
“Racing enthusiasts around the globe can now find information about the old Hav-A-Tampa Late Model Series, the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series, Mississippi State Challenge, World of Outlaws Sprints, Comp Cams Super Dirt Series, All Star Circuit of Champions Sprints and even the old All Star Circuit of Champions Late Model series. We just finished a project to import the history of the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds into our site and we’re going to be working hard adding to that series as part of Speed51.com’s excellent Dirt Modified focus in 2016. To that end we’ve added the entire Michigan Dirt Cup and Race of Champions Dirt Modified history in as well.”
While the site focuses heavily on races and drivers from the past, 51’s Third Turn is also committed to recording results from all the action going on across the country today. In April alone, heading into the final weekend, 51’s Third Turn has already added results to 416 events across the globe such as Micro Sprints in California, Dirt Midgets in Illinois, Dirt Late Model racing in Australia, and Asphalt Modified races in New England.
Looking at the calendar for 2016, 51’s Third Turn anticipates adding results to 6,042 races across 329 different series.
“It’s a busy year coming up for sure, but we feel that every racing series – from NASCAR Sprint Cup to the grassroots B-Mod or Street Stock series running at your local dirt track – should have its history preserved for race fans everywhere,” adds Quievryn. “If you run a touring short track series that you don’t see we have a 2016 schedule for, we’d love to hear from you.”
51’s Third Turn would also appreciate any fans that may have additional information to help build the archive. In particular, the site is keen to hear from fans who possess and would be willing to scan in articles from Area Auto Racing News, Late Model Digest – especially the paper’s early years (1988-2000), Midwest Racing News, National Dirt Digest, Southern Auto Racing News, Speedway Scene, Wheelspin Racing News, and Hawkeye Racing News just to name a few useful publications.
