10 Things to Know: Dixie Classic at Birch Run

1 – The Birch Run Speedway (MI) opened in 1948 and was paved in the early 1960s.  The track held lots of races on the inner surface before a 4/10s of a mile oval was added outside the original layout.

2 – The Outlaw Super Late Model finale for the Reveal the Hammer Series will be 100 laps on Saturday night.

3 – The first Dixie Classic was held back in 1966 when Joy Fair went to victory lane at what was Dixie Motor Speedway.  Fair would go on to win the race again in 1975.

4 – Steve Needles comes into the race seeking his third-straight win in the race after 2020 was canceled.  Needles won in 2019 and 2018.

5 – Former Snowball Derby winner Ed Howe won the Dixie Classic five times in a 14-year span.  Howe was the first driver to go back-to-back in the race after winning in 1967 and 1968.

6 – For all that he has done in an Outlaw Super Late Model, winning at Birch Run is something Tyler Roahrig has never done.  He’s been big on the West side with four wins in the Kalamazoo Klash, but this is Birch Run and he’ll be hunting his first if he rolls in the gates.

7 – More than 20 drivers are expected to be on the grounds for the finale of the Reveal the Hammer Series.  The race winner gets $5,000.

8 – John Doening, Jr. is a seven time winner of the Dixie Classic event.  His first three wins were on the track’s original length, a 1/3-mile oval.  After the big track was added, he also added to his win total with four more victories.

9 – Steve Needles is ready to clinch the Reveal the Hammer series champion at Birch Run.  After two wins this season and a fast time award Needles has been first or second in every race.  A few races have fallen to Mother Nature, but that hasn’t slowed Needles down one bit.  He holds a 26 point lead over Shawn Amor who was second to Needles in the last race at Berlin Raceway.
