10 Things to Know About the Winchester 400

This weekend marks one of the crown jewels in Super Late Model racing, the 49th Running of the Winchester 400 presented by JEGS.  To preview Sunday’s big race, here are 10 Things to Know about the Winchester 400.

1 – It’s not just the 400 lap race on Sunday that is a must see, the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour races on Friday night along with the Vores Compact Touring Series and Thunder Roadsters.  Also, the 15th annual Run for the Gun 50 will be on Saturday for the Midwest Modifieds Tour, as well as the season finales for the CRA Street Stocks and Late Model Sportsman.

2 – Check the schedule before you head to the track this year, as racing is scheduled to take place more in the day light then the night time.  Green flag on Sunday is scheduled for 1pm.

3 – The JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour race on Friday night will be 100 laps.  Former Winchester 400 winners Travis Braden and Stephen Nasse will each race in the event.  Braden, Cody Coughlin, Josh Brock and Charlie Keeven will be in contention for the series title.

4 – This will be the 49th Running of the Winchester 400.  Stephen Nasse won the race a year ago, leading a record 392 laps that day.

5 – We look down the list and see a lot of veterans in fast cars returning to Winchester seeking their first rifle.  Could Augie Grill, Jeff Fultz, Bubba Pollard or Donnie Wilson take home the win?  Ironically, those four drivers all drive for four different chassis manufacturers.

6 – Don’t count out Cody Coughlin at the Winchester 400.  The Ohio native has been in the top 10 of all five of his previous Winchester 400s.  He was a career-best second in 2015.

7 – Donnie Wilson has led 344 laps in the Winchester 400 in his prior 11 starts.

8 – This year, the track staff, along with Speed51’s Bob Dillner are going the extra mile with post-race concerts and a busy midway at the race track.  There was also the Winchester Round-up kickoff show Thursday night in downtown Winchester adding to the festivities.

9 – Sunday’s race is 400 laps on the high-banked half mile.  This is one of the toughest tests in all of short track racing.

10 – The winner of the races get one of the coolest trophies in asphalt short track racing, the Winchester Rifle.  It’s long been a tradition to hold it up and act like you’re going to shoot it, but don’t worry, it’s not a working gun.
