10 Things to Know About the North-South Shootout

This weekend, one of the major Modified events of the South roars back into action, the North-South Shootout.  This year, the event is taking place at Caraway Speedway, the fifth time the event has taken place at the Sophia, North Carolina facility.




To prepare for Saturday’s race, here are 10 Things to Know about the North-South Shootout.

1 – This will be the 18th North-South Shootout, The event started at Concord Speedway (NC) in 2003 and has seen some location changes, but it’s still one of the most prestigious Modified events around.  It’s been held in North Carolina every season since.


2 – A total of 525 Laps are scheduled for Saturday at the North-South Shootout. The Tour Type Modified race and the Super Late Model race will each be 150 laps.


3 – Matt Hirschman is a six-time winner of the North-South Shootout.  He always runs well in the this event regardless of the location.  Big Money Matt will be chasing his seventh win in the North-South Shootout.


4 – Everyone will be seeking something this weekend on the track and James Civali is one of those guys who will be looking for for some luck.  In seven prior starts Civali has only one top 10 run in the North-South Shootout.


5 – Racing starts at 1:30pm Saturday at Caraway Speedway.  Practice and time trials will take place on Friday at Caraway.  There will also be an optional practice day on Thursday.


6 – Speed51.TV will be the home of the the live video feed of the North-South Shootout.  If you can’t make it to North Carolina, watch live this weekend.

8 – Jeff Fultz will be running the Tour-Type Modified race at the North-South Shootout.  He is twice a former winner of the Late Model portion of this event at both Concord and Caraway.


9 – For those who don’t know Caraway Speedway is just under a half-mile in length, measured at 0.455.  The semi-high banked track creates lots of action in the turns and on the long straight aways.  The old NASCAR Southern Modified Tour raced their 60 times. George Brunnhoelzl, III won 13 times and Andy Seuss was a 12-time winner.


10 – Ron Silk will be making his 10th start this weekend in the North-South Shootout.  That’s a milestone for him, but Matt Hirschman and Burt Myers will both be making their 17th start in this historic race.
