Clay Campbell told his crew at the conclusion of practice that the No. 52 was “probably the best car I’ve ever driven.”   Campbell, whose day job is President of Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, hooked up with Ken Schrader Racing for this event.
5:21
Dylan Kwasniewski, the 2013 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion and contender for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year title in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2014 had already left the track when 51 stopped by his garage stall after practice, but his crew said the driver was pleased with his No. 4 that finished second on the speed chart.   Kwasniewski is gaining superspeedway experience in the ARCA race this weekend in preparation for his debut on the Nationwide side with Turner Scott Motorsports next weekend.

The World Crown 300 is one of the prestigious Super Late Model events on the Southern Super Series schedule. Last year, Preston Peltier added his name to a winner’s list of who’s won in stock car racing. Past winners include Dick Trickle, Gary Balough, Darrell Waltrip, Rich Bickle, Ronnie Sanders, Chase Elliott and more. Make your plans now to be a part of the 31st Annual event on Saturday, August 9th. Click here for more information.
5:16
Eight-time ARCA Racing Series winner at Daytona Bobby Gerhart set the lap-time standard early in today’s practice that was never approached by any other driver.   Gerhart, who said last year at Talladega that he would be retiring at the time, is back and just as strong as ever.

“You can’t really learn a lot today,” said Gerhart after finishing practice atop the speed chart.   “The first time we went out, we just wanted to make sure the car would stay in one piece.   The second run was just to re-learn the track.   Other than that, you can’t learn much.   But, I was surprised that the time stayed on top considering I never drafted and some guys did.”

Gerhart  plans to compete in  about half of the ARCA events  on the schedule this year, plus a handful of NASCAR Nationwide Series  races.

CHECKERED FLAG: ARCA Racing Series practice is over for the day here at Daytona. Bobby Gerhart finished practice pretty much where he started it – on top. Dylan Kwasniewski, Clay Campbell, Chase Elliott and Leilani Munter rounded out the top five. Full results to follow.
4:58
Benny Gordon was a late entrant into the race after Clay Rogers was scratched due to an injury.

Rogers was scheduled and entered to be behind the wheel, but he suffered a broken wrist in the SpeedFest Super Late Model race at Watermelon Capital Speedway (GA) last month. Team officials told 51 that Rogers wasn’t medically cleared until it was too late to commit to having him race at Daytona. Sponsorship was hinging on Rogers being able to compete, so when the clearance wasn’t there in time, the ride opened up for Gordon who brought additional sponsorship, to compete at Daytona this weekend.

Frank Kimmel is currently 25th on the speed chart. The defending champion said that they’re down on the charts partly because they haven’t done any drafting yet today, but even still, the car is not where he wants it to be. “We’ve been gaining on it every time out all day, but that last time we went out it got some kind of miss in the motor. I’m not really sure what it is, but the guys are working to figure it out.”

Millbridge Speedway is the new breeding ground for future NASCAR stars! In 2011 the Burnett’s took over Millbridge Speedway to convert it to a premier Outlaw Kart Track! The track has seen much needed improvements over the last 3 years including new lights, new walls, and a new configuration for 2013. The Mini Outlaw karts put on an amazing show with 2 and 3 wide racing throughout the field. Millbridge Speedway is only open on select Wednesday nights for racing. This enables people who travel or race at other venues on the weekends to race with us and has a good time during the week. Click here for more information.

Austin Wayne Self is here for practice today, but will not be able to race this weekend.   ARCA rules dictate that a driver must be 18 years old in order to compete at their speedway and superspeedway events like Daytona.   Self will be competing in the full 2014 ARCA Racing Series schedule with the exception of here at Daytona, but he will still receive points for being here.   Here’s how…

Self will not turn 18 until March 5 and the only event he is not eligible to compete in this season is here at Daytona.   Because he is competing full-time beyond Daytona, ARCA’s Mark Gundrum  confirmed to Speed51.com that Self will be allowed to make one lap in practice, staying on the apron of the track.   By completing just one lap, Self will receive championship points for showing up for the event.   After practice, Self will officially withdraw from the event.

I heard somewhere that Kimmel was going to the 32. Apparently that’

Kimmel is in a Win-Tron Racing car, but he kept his No. 44. Terry Jones is in the second Win-Tron entry, No. 32. Win-Tron’s primary driver in 2013, Mason Mingus, remains with that team in a jump up to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2014.
