Night One of Chili Bowl Nationals Belongs to “Yung Money”

January 10, 2018 • App, Archives, Dirt Cars, Region - Midwest, Top Stories

Kyle Larson has had eventful preliminary nights at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals seemingly every year for the last five years. In 2015, he was involved in a crash in his heat race and he won the A-Main after transferring through the “Alphabet Soup.” In 2017, Larson spun out and finished 21st in the A-Main, causing him to have to try to go through the soup on Saturday to make the 55-lap feature.

This year, everything seemed to go right for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series star as he won his heat race, finished second in the Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions and won the A-Main on Warren CAT Qualifying Night.

300x250 SpeedFest PPV 2018.01“It’s cool to be back up here on the stage,” Larson said on the RacinBoys.com live stream in victory lane. “Last year was a struggle, so to have a smooth night, this is the first time I’ve had a smooth prelim night in five or six years it feels like. So this was a clean night and hopefully we can keep it up front on Saturday.”

Larson started in the second position on the outside of Zach Daum. Daum lost the lead to Larson on lap 8 as Larson whipped around the outside of Daum using the cushion that had built up almost right on the wall.

After losing the lead to Larson, Daum lost a lot more 12 laps later. Daum was running third, in the last transfer position when the caution came out for a flip by Travis Rilat. Second-place runner Brad Sweet slowed quickly when the caution came out, causing Daum to have to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting Sweet’s No. 63 machine. Daum stalled the car and had to go to the rear of the field. As a result, Daum finished 16th and will have to go through the alphabet soup on Saturday to make the

feature.

Behind Larson, the battle for the transfer positions heated up after Daum’s misfortune. Sweet, Tyler Courtney, Tom Harris and Logan Seavey all put themselves in position to fight it out in the closing laps. Harris tried to work the bottom berm while Seavey tried to roll the cushion around everyone into a transfer position.

Ultimately, it was Sweet finishing second, Courtney taking the final transfer in third, Harris finishing fourth and Seavey rounding out the top five.

Chad Boat Sails to VIROC Victory Lane

Chad Boat drew the pole position for the 10th running of the Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions on Tuesday night and parlayed that into a victory. Boat held off a hard-charging Kyle Larson who drove from eighth to second in the 20-lap feature. Tanner Thorson finished third, Tracy Hines finished fourth and Brad Sweet finished fifth.

Boat collected $6,363.63 for his victory in memory of the late Bryan Clauson.

Tuesday’s PitBoxes.com Pit Crew of the Day

Each day during the 32nd Chili Bowl Nationals, PitBoxes.com will team up with Speed51.com to present the Pit Crew of the Day award.  The winner of each day will receive a $100 product certificate to use towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art pit box from PitBoxes.com.

The winner for Warren CAT Qualifying Night is Kenney Johnson out of Bethany, Connecticut and his team owned by Mike Johnson. Johnson doesn’t exactly come from a dirt Midget racing hotbed in Connecticut, but was able to finish fourth in his heat, transfer from the C-Main to the B-Main before being caught up in an incident and finishing 15th. For their preparation prior to the beginning of the Chili Bowl, Kenney Johnson Motorsports is being awarded with the PitBoxes.com Pit Crew of the Day award.
