A pair of defending World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing champions highlight the latest list of entries for this year’s 50th running of the event at New Smyrna Speedway (FL).  2015 Super Late Model champion Zane Smith and 2015 Tour-Type Modified champion Ryan Preece have both filed official entries for the 2016 version of the event.

graphic hampton inn new smyrnaSmith of Huntington Beach, California entered the 2015 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing as a relatively unknown.  He used a string of consistent finishes including seven top 10s, four top-five finishes and one victory to score the overall Super Late Model championship.  That kicked off a 2015 season that saw Smith grab the attention of short track racing fans throughout the country before eventually ending his season with a runner-up finish in the prestigious Snowball Derby.

One year ago, Preece (Berlin, Connecticut) kicked off his first full season with the Eddie Partridge-owned No. 6 team at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.  The team came out firing right out of the gate by scoring four wins in six races during Speedweeks and eventually winning the overall Tour-Type Modified championship.

Preece’s performance at New Smyrna kicked off a successful 2015 campaign that saw him score four NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour wins, finish runner-up in the NWMT standings and make five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts.  This year he will be behind the wheel of a Modified at New Smyrna Speedway before kicking off a full-time season behind the wheel of a JD Motorsports car in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Joining Smith and Preece on the latest list of entries is second-generation racer Harrison Burton, who scored two Super Late Model wins at New Smyrna one year ago.  In addition to filing an entry for the SLM portion of the event, Burton will also make his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut with HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks on Sunday, February 14.

2014 Super Late Model division runner-up Stephen Nasse, Maine racer Garrett Hall, CARS Tour driver Tyler Ankrum, Canadian Donald Theetge, Florida’s Derrick Kelley and Crooks Racing’s Vinnie Miller have also filed entries and plan to chase the overall Super Late Model championship.

Other entries include Etienne Cliche (Tour-Type Modified), Tim Sargent (Pro Late Model), Jake Spiller (Pro Late Model), Grant Griesbach (Pro Late Model), Derrick Kelley (Pro Late Model) Kevin Thomas, Jr. (Pro Late Model), Tim Russell (Pro Late Model) and Wayne Parker (Florida Modifieds).

Drivers who plan to make the trip to New Smyrna for the 50th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing on February 12-20 are encouraged to file their official entry forms soon with the speedway office.
