Bell Makes Tulsa His Personal Playground on Chili Bowl Thursday

January 12, 2018 • App, Archives, Dirt Cars, Region - Midwest, Top Stories

Christopher Bell has proven over the last few years that he’s always a contender at the Chili Bowl. But on Thursday night, the defending champion of the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl proved that the River Spirit Expo Center is his playground. Bell swept his night and took home the win in Thursday’s 25-lap A-Main to transfer into Saturday’s 55-lap main event.

The night for Bell started in the second of 11 heat races. Bell started eighth and won his heat race with a last-lap pass. He then went on to win his qualifier race and lock down the pole position for the night’s feature.

300x250-51-network-2017After starting from the pole, Bell quickly erased any thoughts anybody had about anyone else being able to challenge Bell for the win. At one point, Bell had a lead of almost five seconds.

Even a couple of cautions couldn’t give anyone else a chance as the Oklahoma native rocketed away on restarts to take the win, his fourth preliminary night win at the Chili Bowl.

“It’s just special, man,” said Bell on the RacinBoys.com live stream.  “It’s really special to be able to race for Keith Kunz. Everyone over there has worked hard to bring great cars at the Keith Kunz Motorsports camp. I’m thankful that I get to drive this hot rod. Now we’ve got one more big one on Saturday.”

While Bell ran away with Thursday’s feature, all eyes were on Shane Golobic. Golobic was one of the first drivers to start working the outside line to try to make up ground, and it worked. Golobic drove from sixth to second to transfer into Saturday’s feature event.

“Christopher was just in a class of his own tonight,” said Golobic on the live stream. “He was pretty quick. I’m getting tired of running second to him this year.”

Chase Johnson finished third to secure the final transfer spot. Tracy Hines finished fourth and Caleb Armstrong completed the top five.

Two other drivers that everyone had an eye on were Tanner Thorson and Michael Pickens. While their finishes of 11th and 14th

respectively do not look too impressive to those that weren’t watching, it’s what they were able to accomplish the rest of the night that had everyone cheering them on.

Thorson and Pickens both had issues in their heat races that caused them to have to start at the back of the D-Mains and try to work their way through the alphabet soup. Both drivers were able to transfer through each race to get into the A-Main and give themselves a better chance on Saturday night.

The 32nd Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals continues on Friday with the final day of preliminary action. Speed51.com will continue to have coverage of the event on our PFC Brakes Twitter Feed – @speed51dotcom. Be sure to give us a follow.

Thursday’s PitBoxes.com Pit Crew of the Day

Each day during the 32nd Chili Bowl Nationals, PitBoxes.com will team up with Speed51.com to present the Pit Crew of the Day award.  The winner of each day will receive a $100 product certificate to use towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art pit box from PitBoxes.com.

The winner for Thursday night is Dooling Hayward Motorsports for their quick diagnosis and fix on Tanner Thorson’s machine to get him back out for the D-Main after an oil line issue in their heat race. Thorson was then able to work his way all the way into the A-Main through the alphabet soup.
