Proposed Bill Could Outlaw Maine Racetrack Camping - Update
Tracks - 5/12/09
A proposed bill in the State of Maine could outlaw overnight camping at the state's racetracks. Bill LD 114 has been endorsed by the Legislature's Health and Human Services committee by 8-2 and could go to the House next for a vote. It would ban overnight RV camping in commerical parking lots. The bill was planned to protect state campgrounds from people camping at places such as Wal-Mart, but could also apply to racetracks, such as Oxford Plains Speedway, Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Unity Raceway, Speedway 95, Wiscasset Raceway and Spud Speedway, as well. The state hosts several big short track events, such at the TD Banknorth Oxford 250 and the PASS 300 at Beech Ridge every year. UPDATE - After a flurry of e-mails and calls against this bill, its sponsor, Rep. Anne Perry, asked her fellow representatives to vote against the bill and on Tuesday morning, that is exactly what they did - voting it down the House. It is now unlikely for the State Senate to move forward with the bill.
